Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol is a recreational, legal drug that American adults over the age of 21 are allowed to consume. Because alcohol is a depressant, people use it not only to have a good time, but also to relax and unwind after a long day. When alcohol is drunk in excess, however, it can have dangerous – and even deadly – consequences.

What is alcohol poisoning?

Alcohol poisoning is a dangerous condition that is arises when one consumes too much alcohol. Typically, it is caused by binge drinking, or consuming a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time. Alcohol poisoning, in its worst stages, can completely inhibit one’s involuntary breathing functions and the gag reflex. This can ultimately result in death.

If someone you know has consumed a large amount of alcohol and is showing the following signs, then he or she is likely suffering from alcohol poisoning:

  • Vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Seizures
  • Slow or irregular breathing
  • Signs of lack of oxygen, such as blue-tinted skin or a low body temperature
  • Passing out

Because alcohol poisoning is so dangerous, anyone suspected of suffering from this condition should be given immediate medical treatment.

College Students and Binge Drinking

Binge drinking is quite common among college students who are new to and inexperienced with consuming alcohol. Often, students are encouraged by their peers to binge drink on their 21st birthdays. Many times, students are also required by certain clubs or groups to binge drink, as well, in order to gain acceptance.

Because of this, alcohol-related deaths do occur at universities every year. Inexperienced students will submit to peer pressure and consume enough alcohol to poison themselves. If someone you love has passed away from alcohol poisoning on a college campus, then you may have a right to take legal action against the institution for not enforcing regulatory policies.
