There are always risks of complications during or after a pregnancy. It is important to have a doctor who is aware of the type of complications to expect and how to avoid them. Unfortunately, some doctors are negligent in the care of their patients during pregnancy and fail to recognize the possibility of a brachial palsy in a newborn baby.
Brachial palsy is the complete loss of movement or varying weakness of the arm brought on by damage to nerves around the shoulder. The brachial plexus is the name for this collection of nerves in the shoulder.
It is a doctor's responsibility to ensure that the baby will have a clear passage and proper direction on its way out of the womb. If proper care is not taken then the infant may come out with his or her feet first, forcing pressure on the shoulders along the birth canal. Procedures like this may cause brachial palsy if not corrected.
Other cases where the baby was delivered head first ended with brachial palsy due to the nurse or doctor pulling on the arms of the baby, causing damage to the tender nerves of the baby's shoulders. There is no excuse for this kind of negligent care.
If you or a loved one experienced a breech delivery or other type of delivery that left your child with brachial palsy, you may be able to claim damages. Contact the Las Vegas personal injury lawyers of William Palmer & Associates, P.C. at 702-888-2222 to learn more about your legal options
