Though rare, airplane crashes do occasionally happen. When they do occur, they generally take with them the lives of everyone onboard. In some cases – in particular, with accidents that occur close to or on the ground – there are some survivors, though these situations are quite unusual. Unfortunately, plane crashes have the potential to ruin many lives – not just those of the people onboard, but those of their families, as well.
The causes of these devastating events are varied, although most commonly they result from human error of some sort or instrument/mechanical failure. Overall, however, the following have all been cited, in at least one case, of causing an airplane accident:
Private pilots are much more likely to be involved in plane crashes than commercial flights. This is likely because commercial airlines are required to adhere to very strict requirements regarding qualifications, alcohol use, maintenance, pre-flight checks, and security. While private pilots must also pass tests and follow sets of rules before, during, and after flight, there are far fewer checks in place for them.
