Every day, millions of people ride up and down escalators on their way to work, shop, or go home. Because injuries related to riding these massive pieces of machinery are relatively rare, many do not realize that the threat of harm is present. Sharp edges, exposure to moving gears and belts, and the phenomenon of a moving staircase often play roles in the injuries that riders can sustain. In general, because of a lack of coordination and quick reaction abilities, children and elderly individuals run a higher risk of suffering an escalator-related injury.
The vast majority of escalator injuries are relatively minor. Many suffer mere scrapes, bruises or cuts from falling on these moving steps after losing their balance or tripping. However, in the rare, severe instances that do arise, victims may sustain gashes necessitating stitches. Some even lose appendages like toes or feet when these body parts get caught in the moving machinery underneath the steps.
While a number of injuries are the result of rider carelessness, many can be prevented with the proper engineering care during escalator design. When manufacturers fail to safely cover up moving mechanisms or leave sharp edges exposed, those who use the escalators are at a much higher risk of being harmed. If you have suffered a serious injury from an escalator as a result of manufacturing or design negligence, then you may have the right to confront the responsible company in court.
