Eye Injuries

People rely on their eyes to understand and appreciate their surroundings. When a person loses his or her eyesight or suffers an eye injury, he or she begins to worry and may start to feel visually inadequate. Eye injuries can be small and last a few days, or they can be severe, lasting for several months or even permanently.

One common cause of eye injuries is exposure to chemicals. Of course, not all chemicals are completely hazardous to your eyes. Some can be considered eye irritants, such as sunscreen or certain types of soap.

Other chemicals are more severe and may have lasting effects. Battery acid and alkalis (found in ammonia and other cleansers) can damage your eyes for a long period of time and may cause irreversible effects if not treated properly. Acids are usually transferred to the eye directly or by rubbing your hands into your eyes.

Corneal abrasions can also occur after a foreign object comes in contact with the eye. If a sharp object comes in contact with the eye at any force, it can scratch the cornea and injure a person. More minor abrasions can be caused from wearing defective contact lenses.

Traumatic iritis and hyphemas are both injuries caused by blunt objects. These injuries can cause trauma in the eye region and may require medical attention.
