Wearing a helmet is extremely important when you are engaged in a high-speed, unprotected activity. Biking, riding a motorcycle, inline skating, and skateboarding are all examples of activities in which the use of a helmet may save your life. Many people choose not to wear this form of “dorky” headgear, however, because it makes them look nerdy or un-cool. Regardless, the fact of the matter remains that a helmet can make the difference between living and dying.
Every year, hundreds of cyclists die on the roads. Of these deaths, approximately 60% are caused by traumatic head injuries, many of which could have been prevented through the use of a helmet. The most common type of cyclist that is killed in a bicycling accident is a young male, without a helmet, who is hit by a car at an intersection.
The most common cause of bicycle-related death is an impact with a motor vehicle. Approximately 90% of cyclist fatalities result from this type of accident. Again, many of these casualties could easily have been prevented with a helmet. Helmets are relatively cheap and easy to acquire, and there is no reason – not even simply going for a short ride – for any cyclist to not wear one.
