The knee is a made up of a series of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bones. Because of the complex nature of the knee it can be very difficult to treat the knee once damage has been done to it.
The most common knee injuries occur from damage to the ligaments. There are four separate ligaments that stretch from the thigh to the shin and cross each other at the knee. When one of these ligaments becomes damaged, the victim can find him or herself in pain when bending the knee or walking. Victims may feel a weakness in the knees and feel unable to keep weight on the knee.
The second most common cause of knee injury is tendon damage. When tendons in the knees become enlarged or irritated the victim will experience immediate pain, usually beneath the kneecap. Pain may worsen with exercises that involve jumping or activities that require stretching.
Dislocation of the kneecap, another common injury, happens when the patella is noticeable outside of its socket. Victims will feel the pain of the kneecap as it shifts from side to side.
If you have major pain in the knee you should seek medical attention. You should also seek medical attention if you feel you cannot put weight on your knee, cannot stretch your knee, experience swelling or redness, or if you hear popping sounds coming from your knee.
