When people think of the word “abuse,” they may not associate it with the elderly. Sadly, many people are unaware of the horrible acts of abuse that happen inside nursing homes.
When we enter our loved ones into a nursing home, we expect that they will receive proper care and treatment. However, some nursing home employees take advantage of residents because they feel they will never be found committing acts of theft, physical abuse, or negligence.
There are several things that you can look out for to determine what kind of abuse may be occurring:
Negligence: If your loved one shows signs of bed sores (holes in the skin or tissue that develop after long periods of being in the same position), then they have been the victims of negligence in the nursing home. If you see that he or she has had little to eat, food has been left in the room, or that trash is accumulating in a certain part of the room, he or she is not being properly cared for.
Physical abuse: Bruising, red eyes, redness of the skin, torn clothing, bleeding, fractured bones, and any additional impairments may be signs that physical abuse is occurring. Serious signs of abuse should be reported.
Acts of theft: Watch for things that go missing while in your loved one's possession. If he or she complains of missing items, you should take action.
