Pool Drain Dangers

Since December 19, 2008, pool owners have been federally required to cover their drains with certified covers, as mandated by the Pool and Spa Safety Act. This measure was established in order to protect unsuspecting victims – typically children – from the dangers posed by poorly covered or protected pool drains. These underwater features produce surprisingly large suction forces that may trap or even eviscerate people. If you have been injured in a poorly or inadequately covered pool drain, then you have the right to take action against the responsible party.

Shocking Pool Drain Injuries

In most cases, swimmers and divers do not give pool drains a second thought because owners usually comply with federal requirements and keep these features correctly sheltered. However, while pool drains may not seem like a serious threat, they can be quite dangerous when not properly covered or maintained. Some of the most tragic and devastating injuries caused by pool drains include the following:

  • Hair entanglement and entrapment: Individuals with longer hair are at risk of having it sucked into a drain, therefore trapping them and causing drowning.
  • Body entrapment: Body parts, such as arms, legs, or even torsos may become sucked against a pool drain, rendering the individual unable to swim up for oxygen. Small children run a higher risk of body entrapment.
  • Evisceration/Disembowelment: Pools drains may pull one’s internal organs, such as the intestines, out of the body if the forces are strong enough. This damage is extremely dangerous and its effects are permanent.

If you have lost someone you love to a pool drain injury, then you have the right to seek the justice you deserve from the party at fault.
