Radon is a colorless, odorless, but radioactive gas found in radium. Not many people know that the inhalation of radon is actually one of the most common causes of lung cancer. Radon emissions cause roughly 20,000 deaths each year in the United States alone. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Cigarette smoking is the first.
Radon accumulates in different areas for different reasons, but it usually comes from the ground or soil on which a structure is built. If the structure (house, building, warehouse, etc.) does not have proper ventilation, radon can enter, accumulate, and not be able to escape. The EPA recommends that all sections of a home under the third floor be tested for radon.
Radon normally enters a residence through:
Radon is more likely to be found in:
Radon continually decays, and in the process of the decay a dispersion of radioactive particles occurs. If any person inhales these particles, they can potentially damage the DNA-structures of the lungs and this can result in lung cancer. If at any point, a person begins coughing up blood, experiencing chest pains, has trouble breathing, or has incessant coughing, he or she should seek medical attention immediately.
If you or someone you know has been the unfortunate victim of radon poisoning, please contact the Las Vegas personal injury lawyers of William Palmer & Associates, P.C. at 702-888-2222 to discuss your case.
