Seat Belt Injuries

While seat belts were developed and installed in motor vehicles in order to protect the occupants from ejection in the case of a heavy impact, they also have been known to cause severe injuries. Poor designs, faulty manufacturing, or seat belt failure all have the potential to result in serious passenger injury. Specifically, these problems can result in serious chest, stomach, and rib injuries after an accident.

Types of Seat Belt Injuries

While the use of a seat belt significantly reduces one’s risk of sustaining serious or life-costing injuries during an automobile accident, sometimes faulty or poorly-designed seat belts may end up causing bodily damage as well. Injuries that may be sustained from a defective seat belt include the following:

  • Stomach lacerations
  • Severe whiplash
  • Broken ribs
  • Miscarriages
  • Intestinal damage
  • Internal organ damage

Even intact seat belts may result in injury if the impact with another vehicle or object occurs at a high velocity. Passengers may experience welts or lacerations along their torsos where the restraining device was strapped against them. Occupants may also experience whiplash as a result of impact.
