Seizures and Seizure Disorders

Seizures occur when the brain’s normal pattern of electrochemical impulses is interrupted and becomes erratic. A seizure may be a one-time occurrence, or part of a seizure disorder – a condition that creates multiple seizures over a person’s lifetime. Seizure disorders can have many causes, including hereditary conditions, birth injuries, and environmental hazards.

Unfortunately, the consequences of multiple seizures can be severe. Over time, the affected person may experience cognitive difficulties, neurological disorders, and physical injuries. If you or a member of your family has suffered from one or more seizures caused by an assault, environmental hazards, or other acts of negligence, call Las Vegas personal injury lawyers Palmer & Associates, P.C. at 702-888-2222.

Seizure Types and Causes

Seizures can be classified in several different ways, depending on their causes and the effects they have on their victims. The two most basic classifications for a seizure are epileptic and non-epileptic. Epileptic seizures often occur multiple times over a person’s life, and have no known cause. Non-epileptic seizures are triggered by a toxin, injury, or other irritant that affects the brain.

In young children, common causes of seizures include hereditary disorders, high fevers due to major infections, and metabolic disorders. Among people aged 25 or older, environmental causes are more likely. Common causes include head injuries, brain tumors, and strokes. Severe alcohol withdrawal may also cause major seizures in adults.

Irritants Linked to Seizures

There are many environmental toxins that can cause seizures in an otherwise healthy adult or child. An incomplete list includes:

  • Amphetamine abuse
  • Severe sleep deprivation
  • Prolonged high fevers
  • Cardiovascular disorders
  • Extreme emotional and physical stress
  • Lead and other heavy metals
  • Oxygen deprivation
  • Infections such as meningitis, rabies, syphilis, etc
  • Brain damage caused by head injuries

If you have been exposed to hazards like these due to the negligence of an employer, property owner, or other party, you could have grounds for legal action. Our Las Vegas personal injury attorneys are ready to fight for you.
