Playing sports is a great way to get exercise, release some competitive steam, and have fun with your friends. However, many of these activities pose inherent risks. A number of sports involve the use of dangerous equipment and projectiles, bodily contact with other players, high-speed motion and strong torquing of various body parts. When other players behave negligently or when coaches do not allow their players enough rest and hydration time, injuries may occur.
A number of injuries occur when people engage in exercise and sports when they are out of shape or not warmed up. However, many more are the result of others’ negligence.
In general, there are two main types of sports injuries – acute and chronic injuries. Acute injuries include all types of hurt that occur as a result of a single incident, such as a sharp joint twist or strong impact. Sprains, fractures, tears, bruises, abrasions and lacerations are all acute injuries. They may be caused by someone else’s loss of control or impulsiveness.
Chronic injuries occur over a period of time as the result of overuse. For example, running too much or training too long without a break may cause a chronic injury. Stress fractures, tendinitis, and growth plate damage are all chronic injuries.
Finally, if participants are not allowed enough time to rest, cool down, and hydrate, they may fall victim to heat-related illnesses. Heat rash, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke all result from a significant rise in body temperature. It is imperative that coaches allow their players to hydrate and take breaks as needed.
