Stray Animals

The proper handling of stray animals not only increases public safety, but it also serves to reunite families with their loved furry friends. For all pet owners, if you have not experienced a missing animal you can imagine the uncertainty and anxiety that can be associated with a lost pet. When encountering any stray animal it is important to keep your personal safety a top priority.

What to do when encountering a stray animal

If you spot a wild animal on the loose in a populated setting please seek shelter in a safe place and call animal control. With all other animals it is important to remember that stray animals can be dangerous. They can carry diseases or have violent dispositions. It is recommended that all children and any other individuals with a more vulnerable immune system stay away from all stray animals.

However, if the animal has clearly visible tags and appears to be clean, healthy, and friendly, you may choose to carefully handle the animal and aid in its return to its family. If you do choose to interact with a stray animal, some precautionary measures should be taken to prevent infection from any diseases the animal may be carrying or additional injuries.

  • Wear protective gear (such as gloves) if you choose to handle a stray animal or pet.
  • Avoid contact with any animal excrement or bodily fluids.
  • Do not bring home an unhealthy or strange animal.
  • Do not let a stray animal lick your face and do not kiss or make any other facial contact with a stray animal.
  • Do not bring home animals that appear to be under sixth months of age.
  • If you are bitten or scratched by a stray animal clean the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention.

If you do not know the phone number for your local animal control center, you can call the local police department and ask for their assistance. Encountering stray animals can be a safe experience when the proper precautions are taken.
