As lawmakers implement new rehabilitation codes, larger fines await property owners who do not ensure safety on their premises. The new codes are set to affect property owners who have abandoned their properties after 35 days or failed to provide upkeep on their rental properties.
The new codes are aimed at keeping appliances out of front yards and swimming pools properly kept up to safety standards, especially under concerns of the West Nile virus.
Violators will be fined $100 a day for the first 10 days, $500 a day for the following 20 days, and $1,000 a day thereafter. The cap was set at $10,000 or three times the cost of bring the property up to code, whichever being the greater. These fines can be waived or reduced if the property owner can provide a plan for fixing their premises, or if the owner successfully appeals the charges.
The increased and new fines are set in place primarily to keep safety standards up to their proper level in Las Vegas. All the same, these codes are punishments, not preventative measures, for injury caused by negligence.
