What is a tort?

A tort is a lawsuit filed by a claimant who has no legal ties to the defender, but has still been harmed by the defender’s negligence. Torts emerged in order to remedy an oversight in civil law; previously, only entities bound by a contract had the right to file a claim against other parties that caused them harm by negligent or deliberately hurtful actions. Under tort law, people outside of contractual obligations may claim damages.
