What is negligence?

In the most general terms, negligence is defined as the failure by an individual to take a reasonable amount of care. This includes failure to take action that a reasonable individual would take as well as taking actions that a reasonable person would not take. When negligence results in injury to another individual, it may serve as the basis for a tort case.
